About Rick

Welcome to my weblog!

Conservative with a hint of social moderation. If pressed, that's how I would describe my political and social views. Not exactly a compassionate conservative, I believe that government should provide little more than a strong defense of the nation, and protect everyone’s right to succeed, or fail, based on one’s ability and desire to use, even exploit, the many opportunities available to the citizens of this great country.

I was born and raised in Watertown, South Dakota, just a stone’s throw from Garrison Keillor’s fictional Lake Wobegon. I went to Sunday school, and lutefisk and lefse dinners; took swimming lessons in the always cold Lake Kampeska; participated in high school debate, chorus and band; and went pheasant hunting every fall. The winters were snowy and too cold; the summers were humid and too short. (Watertown’s true claim to fame these days is that it is the former home of John Hinderaker, co-founder of the influential weblog, Powerline.) It was a great place to grow up!

I graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1971 with a degree in political science. After college, like many other Vietnam-era students, I was obligated to serve in the military. Basic training was at beautiful Ft. Lewis, Washington, while officer training was at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, where I studied the fine art of field artillery. After completing my field artilery training, Uncle Sam offered me an an eight year stint in the Army Reserve, which I gladly accepted. I was honorably discharged with the rank of captain 8 years later, thankful that I never had to fire a shot, or be shot at, in anger.

Shortly after leaving the Army, I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where I currently reside; there to eventually become an entrepreneur of sorts, as a real estate broker and investor. I have a lovely wife and two worthless priceless (as per my lovely wife) dogs. My interests are many and varied, and include, in no particular order: skiing; oldies music; bridge; a little trumpet playing; and, political commentary with a bit of social commentary thrown in for good measure.

If you read my rants, I will try not to bore you with my drinking habits, sexual exploits, or financial woes as other pundits might. I promise never to live-blog any reality shows or beauty pageants. If I veer off into the realm of widgets and witticisms, somebody please snap me out of it. That said....God bless the United States of America!
