Cheney Knows Better

Vice President Dick Cheney went quail hunting on Saturday, but ended up shooting something much larger than a quail. He shot one of his hunting companions, attorney Harry Whittington, 78, in the face and upper body.

It was left to the ranch owner, Katharine Armstrong, to explain how it happened. Unfortunately, she said that it was the victim's fault for not notifying everyone that he had rejoined the hunting party after looking for a downed quail.

I have been hunting many times and own many guns but have never heard anything so asinine. The responsibility lies with the person pulling the trigger, period. A hunter must always be aware of his surroundings and must always know what is in the area he is shooting toward. The ranch owner can say whatever she wants in an effort to deflect blame from the Vice President, but if Cheney had killed one of her cows, she would have sent him a bill.

There is no excuse for shooting someone while hunting. Vice President Cheney needs to be a stand-up guy and accept full responsibility publicly.

Update: Today, Wednesday, February 15, 2006, Vice President Dick Cheney, in an interview with Brit Hume of the Fox News Channel, said:

Ultimately, I'm the guy who pulled the trigger that fired the round that hit Harry. You can talk about all of the other conditions that existed at the time, but that's the bottom line and there's no...it's not Harry's fault. You can't blame anybody else. I'm the guy who pulled the trigger and shot my friend...

...And it was, I'd have to say, one of the worst days of my life, at that moment.

The Vice President got it exactly right. He is a stand up guy.
