And The Winner Is.......Nobody
There is an old adage that declares: A pig wearing lipstick is still a pig.
For years the goal of conservatives was to repeal Obamacare, aka the 'Un'Affordable Care Act. Then the moderates got into the act and decided that they would not be satisfied with just repealing Obamacare and would also replace it with another big government program, and the mantra became "repeal and replace," essentially putting lipstick on Obamacare
If the figures put forth by White House spokesman Sean Spicer are correct, Obamacare currently has an enrollment of about 10 million people. Using round numbers, another 14 million people who should have signed up for Obamacare have filed for hardship status and finally about six million people pay a penalty for not buying Obamacare Thanks to Supreme Court Justice John Roberts' ultimate wisdom that penalty is called 'a tax.'
The bill that was going to be voted on today in the House Of Representatives was going to do neither repeal or replace, but was merely going to tinker with, Obamacare.
Millions of Americans became part time workers because of Obamacare and millions more haven't been hired because of the employer mandates found therein.
Millions of Americans who have Obamacare have discovered that their insurance is basically unusable. In many cases the deductibles are so high people still can't afford to go to the doctor and those that aren't the beneficiaries of huge government subsidies are paying higher and higher monthly premiums with some increases over 100% year to year.
I understand that there were constraints put on the lawmakers because of the arcane rules of the Senate which require 60 votes to stop debate and allow a new bill to be brought up for a vote. Of course we know this wouldn't have stopped former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) were he the current Senate Majority Leader. He would have just changed the rules of the Senate as he did a few short years ago when he wanted to appoint a bunch of liberal judges to the federal bench. Unfortunately, current Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) isn't man enough to rescue 1/6th of the American economy from the ravages of Obamacare by changing the Senate rules and would rather cling to the outdated Senate filabuster rule.
If it were as important as I believe it is to repeal Obamacare and replace it with a free market alternative which would hopefully drive insurance premiums and deductibles down, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would step up and change the rules of the Senate.
Is that lipstick I see on Senator McConnell's collar?
